// Based in Copenhagen, STUDIO YOLK edits one-off objects made with feelings. Producted with local craftsmen, they are liberated from any “ism”. Encounter with Morten Linde, its founder.

  • Comment STUDIO YOLK a-t-il vu le jour ? // What is the STUDIO YOLK starting point?

At Studio Yolk everything we create is one-off and handcrafted. We are a family based studio. Pernille and I have lived together for 35 years and two of our three adult children are involved in YOLK. Pernille, Amanda and I are from the Royal Danish Academy of Design in Copenhagen. Carl Otto studies Fine Arts at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Our professional disciplines range from product and furniture design, visual communication, fashion and fine art. We work individually, interdisciplinary and we work close with skilled craftsmen. There is a story and thought within each object, something that have taken or takes place from the inner depths. Both Pernille Iben and I are psychotherapists in addition to our professional background from the Royal Danish Academy of Design.

// Between humor and design, your creations are singular. How do you consider your creative identity?

//
We use our voice as artists and designers to express feelings, emotions, stories or memories that unfold in us. We turn these into objects that we share through STUDIO YOLK. Hopefully this will awake something on the inside of the perceiver and open the mind to want to debate across societies, genders and cultures. In some of our present work we use humor as a way to express things that are difficult or hard to contain or handle. Humor is a tool to make you look at things from a different angle. Or to soften up difficult issues. Our objects need to be able to stand by oneself without words and if you are curious or feel like it, you can dive into the story and our DNA.

  • Peut-on qualifier votre design de “pop” ? // Could we talk about your design as “pop”?

//
We prefer not to put ourselves in a specific group or ism. We want to stay open and have as few restrictions as possible to have as much space for creativity as possible. We understand that there is a desire to put us in a category and this is fine with us. We haven’t looked at our art and design language as being pop. But it sounds cool and fun.

// Is Studio Yolk anchored in a new vision of daily life?

//
We want to create physical objects that has an emotional value. We put a lot of feelings, experience, thoughts and energy into each piece and we hope that our recipients are able to feel this. We really think our philosophy goes hand in hand with the times we live in. Our production is small, everything is handmade and one-off, and our objects and art have a long live time.

// How is craftsmanship involved in your creations?

For sure there are thing we can’t make in house and then we both want and need to work with selected local craftsman. It is very inspiring. We appreciate the opportunity to experiment and explore new areas at the same time, and we really want to maintain a high level of craftsmanship in our design as well.
